Michael Healy-Rae's bafflement at Lucy's makeup routine on Living With Lucy was comedy gold

“Is it not layer then on top of layer? Does it not get all shitey?”

IN LAST NIGHT’S episode of Living With Lucy, Lucy Kennedy travelled to Kerry to spend the weekend in the home of eccentric politician Michael Healy-Rae.

He greeted her with this line, and after spending a couple of days with him, Lucy had to concede that he might be right:

You must really be mental to want to come and live with me for the weekend, like. Have you no place better to go?

She got up with Michael at the crack of dawn every day to tend his farm, help him run his shop, shake hands with his constituents, and listen to him talk on the phone (which he answers at any time of the day or night).

It was a real clash of cultures, as evidenced by Michael’s bafflement about Lucy’s makeup routine, which was a recurring theme throughout the episode. Really, he could NOT get his head around it. Every time she got the makeup brushes out, he went off on one:

Do you know that you’re painting your face for the last fifteen minutes. If you were going into combat with the Zulus long ago you wouldn’t be painting as much.

Are you going to plaster your face again today? I’ll tell you what… you should get a cloth, and hot water, wash your face and just go ‘way.

The length of time you give at your face, I don’t know how you get anything done at all. You put LAYER upon LAYER… I would have loved to have been in the bathroom last night when you were washing your face, because it must have been like a circus. It must have been like a slurry tank. There must have been drools of black and brown and every colour… Leave all that scutter inside in the car.
It is not layer then on top of layer? Does it not get all shitey? There are sweeping brushes inside of houses and they do not get as much use as that sweeping brush of yours.

Viewers couldn’t help but find his continued bemusement extremely funny:

But some women couldn’t help but admire Lucy for doing her makeup efficiently in a moving car:

Look Michael, we may not see eye to eye on all things, but you simply must acknowledge that makeup application takes skill. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. In fact, we would pay good money to see him try it. There’s an idea for you, TV3…
